GNLF founder Subash Ghising passes away
An important political figure in the history of West Bengal politics, ghising was the key challenger to the Left Front government's might in the 1980s.
A Gorkha Rifles soldier and later a teacher, he formed the party and demanded for a separate Gorkhaland that resulted in a bloodbath between 1986 and 1988.
Immense force was used to Jyoti Basu, the then chief minister, to avoid the state from dividing. He also paid a high price to bring peace in the hills.
After Ghising's death, his close aide Bimal Gurung said,"The sad demise of Mr. Subhash Ghising is a political loss to the Hill people. His contribution towards the development of the Hills will always be appreciated. I extend my heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family and pray that God give them the strength to bear the loss."
