Ganesh Jayanti 2018 is being observed on Sunday not only in India but across the globe. It is the birthday or birth anniversary of Hindu Lord Ganesha and is also known as Magha Shukla Chaturthi, Tilkund Chaturthi and Varad Chaturthi. According to the Hindu calendar, Maghi Ganesh Jayanti is different from Ganesh Chaturthi which is celebrated in the month of Bhaadrapada.

It is believed that on this particular day, Lord Ganesha reached Earth for the first time. Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is considered as the God of Beginnings. It is said that Lord Ganesha was created out of sandalwood paste by Goddess Parvati. This auspicious Ganesh Jayanti day is a Hindu festival, falling on the Shukla Chaturthi during the Magha Lunar Month. So, the Maghi Ganesh Jayanti is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi day, the fourth day of the waxing moon phase.

On Maghi Ganesh Jayanti 2018, devotees will also celebrate a Palkhi Yatra in Pune, Maharashtra. Lord Ganesha is worshipped on this day, and Shodashopachar Puja is conducted. Devotees further prepare special dishes for the naivedya that is prasad. The food items are prepared with til or sesame, hence the occasion of Ganesh Jayanti is also known as Til Kund Chaturthi or Tila Kunda Chavithi.
