Gandhian Sasi Perumal dies during TASMAC stir
Tamil Nadu, Aug 1: Renowned Gandhian activist Sasi Perumal who has been fighting against TASMAC, demanding total prohibition in the State died Friday afternoon.
He climbed on top of a mobile tower in Unnamali town near Marthandam urging the government to shift a TASMAC shop situated close to educational institutes and temples. Police said that Perumal was accompanied by Unnamalai Town Panchayat Chairman R. Jayaseelan who said that they would immolate themselves if they did not meet their demands.
After the government and TASMAC officials assured that they would shift the shop within a week, Jayaseelan came down, but Perumal refused to oblige.
Following this, fire authorities brought down his unconscious body. He was immediately rushed to the Government Taluk Hospital in Kuzhithurai, where the doctors pronounced him brought dead around 1.30 p.m. He was bleeding from his nose and abdomen.
