Chennai, Dec 6: One of the most popular leaders in the country, J Jayalalithaa passed away at 11.30 PM at the Apollo Hospital on Monday.
There has been an outpouring of grief in Tamil Nadu since the news broke out. Amma as she was fondly called was a popular leader.
She was well-known in the state for her schemes which made her a very popular leader.
Here are some of the schemes launched by Jayalalithaa which made her an instant hit with the masses:

All
Women
Police
stations:
The
first
all
women
police
station
was
set
up
in
1992.
Currently
there
are
200
such
police
stations
across
Tamil
Nadu.
40 per cent of such police stations are present in Tamil Nadu.
Cradle
baby
scheme:
Launched
in
1992
in
Salem
this
scheme
was
aimed
at
combating
the
low
sex
ratio
and
curb
female
infanticide.
By 2011 the state had registered an upward trend in the child sex ratio.
New
Veeranam
scheme:
This
project
aimed
at
catering
to
the
drinking
water
problems
in
Chennai.
The
same
was
implemented
in
2004.
Although it was C N Annadurai who introduced the scheme and later by Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa is said to have given a fresh lease of life to this project.
In 2001, she named it the New Veeranam scheme.
Rainwater
harvesting
movement:
Started
in
2001,
she
made
rainwater
harvesting
compulsory
in
all
buildings.
Statistics suggest that there was a marked improvement in Chennai's ground water table after this scheme was introduced.
Free
laptop
scheme:
In
2011
this
scheme
was
introduced
for
students
of
government
and
government
aided
schools
and
colleges.
The scheme is said to have benefitted 3.25 lakh students.
Amma
canteens:
Launched
in
2013,
the
scheme
aimed
at
providing
food
at
cheap
rates.
An
idli
would
cost
Rs
1,
pongal
Rs
5
and
curd
rice
Rs
3.
Amma
baby
care
kits:
This
scheme
was
aimed
at
improving
hygiene
of
post
natal
mothers
and
new
born
babies.
Under this scheme a kit containing 16 items which included a towel, dress, bed, protective net, napkin, oil, baby soap, shampoo, soap box, liquid hand wash, nail cutter, baby rattle, toy, and a medicinal preparation to improve mother's health was given.
