Former Manipur CM Rishang Keishing passes away

Former Manipur Chief Minister and the world's oldest parliamentarianRishang Keishing died on Tuesday at a private hospital due to multiple-organ failure. He was 96.

On July 1 this year, Keishing was admitted to the hospital due to age-related health problems. He was declared dead by the doctors at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences hospital at Imphal at around 8.15 PM on Tuesday.

Following his demise, the Manipur government declared a three-day mourning in the state.

He has served as Manipur has served as Manipur Chief Minister four times, besides stints in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Keishing, who hailed from Bungpa village in Ukhrul district, was elected to the Lok Sabha in the first Parliamentary elections held in 1952. He had also represented Manipur in Rajya Sabha. He is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters.

He joined the Indian National Congress (INC) under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and since then he remained a member of AICC.

He was the last surviving member of India's first post-1947 Parliament. His term at Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament ended on April 9, 2014.
