Former army havaldar paid to spy on Pokhran scientists

New Delhi, Dec 30: The investigations that are being conducted following the arrest of a former havaldar in the army at Rajasthan has revealed that he allegedly kept a watch on scientists in and around the Pokhran area.

Govardhan Singh who retired from the army as a havaldar was working as a revenue officer at Khetolai which is around 5 kilometres away from the Pokhran nuclear range.

Booked under the Official Secrets Act of 1923, Singh is now being questioned by the Intelligence Bureau. The investigations have revealed money transactions into his account.

Further it is also stated by the investigating agency that he passed on information to his handlers by using the Voice over Internet Protocol.

His task was mainly to keep a watch over the scientists working at the nuclear range. He used his local contacts to gather details about the scientists which he would later on pass to his handlers.

Investigations have also found that he did not deal directly with a handler in Pakistan. The call records and also the money transactions indicate that he was in touch with one person from Uttar Pradesh.

Singh would pass on information to his handler in Uttar Pradesh. From here the information would go to Pakistan, investigations have also found.
