Mumbai, September 11: The Bombay High Court on Thursday granted bail to retired IPS officer and former Deputy Inspector General of Gujarat, DG Vanzara.

Vanzara, who spent seven years in Sabarmati Central Prison, is accused in carrying out fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife in 2005 and Tulsiram Prajapati in 2006, Ishrat Jahan, Sadik Jamal and others.

As many as thirteen policemen were arrested for their alleged involvement in staging the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and in the killing of his wife.

59-year-old Vanzara had resigned from his post soon after he was arrested on April 24, 2007, along with two other IPS officers Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN.

In seven years, Vanzara, an IPS officer of 1987-batch, made several attempts in securing bail.

On February 24, 2008, Vanzara was released on bail for 72 hours to attend his nephew's marriage.

On the Supreme Court's directive, the Gujarat Government had constituted a CID team under IGP Geetha Johri to investigate the case.

In September 2013, Vanzara again grabbed the headlines for writing a resignation letter, in which he had also accused the Gujarat Government of betraying its loyal officers.
