Failure to authenticate Aadhaar could lead to denial of benefits: SC
The Supreme Court has said that the failure to authenticate Aadhaar could lead to denial of benefits to the needy. The concerns in this regard raised by the petitioners need to be taken seriously the Bench also noted.
The Bench is hearing a batch of petitions which challenged the authenticity of Aadhaar. The Bench said that the people would be refused benefits if they failed to authenticate their Aadhaar numbers. It is not largesse and neither is it charity. We need to find answers for this a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra observed.
The petitioners urged the Bench to exclude all programmes related to children, rehabilitation and food related schemes from the requirement of Aadhaar authentication. The concerns raised by the government related to potential diversion of funds can be addressed by permitting citizens to use their other identity documents the petitioners also contended.
