Earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hits Bay of Bengal, tremors felt in Chennai

New Delhi, Feb 12: An earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal region on Tuesday morning, according to the US Geological Survey. As reported by ANI, the quake struck the region around 7 am.

Light tremors were also felt in Chennai. However, no casualty or damage to property was reported.

As per Geological Survey, the epicentre was 10 km below sea level and the quake struck about 609 km away from Chennai. Residents in Chennai felt the tremors and took to social media social media that they felt tremors in several parts.

Earlier on February 5, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale struck Kashmir. The tremors had lasted for several seconds. The epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of 40 km in northwestern Kashmir, 118 km from Srinagar. The same day an earthquake of magnitude 3.8 struck Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. The tremors were felt in the evening. No reports of injuries or any damage to property were reported.

The year 2019 has just begun and India has already seen a number of earthquakes, out of which most of them have occurred in the last couple of days. And most of these quakes have occurred in either Himachal Pradesh or Jammu and Kashmir region with tremors being felt in the neighboring areas.
