Do drugs in college and face one year jail term

Bengaluru, Nov 22: The Karnataka PU department on Tuesday issued a new directive to all the colleges to take strict action against instances of drug abuse among students.
According to a report in the Bangalore Mirror, the department has issued a new directive to colleges, asking them to report such incidents to the police so that cases can be filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The report also stated that it will also allow frequent checks on campuses, and will authorize the police to seize and arrest a student.
Under the NDPS Act, a student or a faculty member found to have consumed cocaine, morphine, diacetylmorphine or any other drug or psychotropic substance will be directly reported to police. The individual could be sent to jail for up to one year, be fined Rs20,000, or both.
Incidents of drug abuse have been witnessed in many of the city's reputed colleges. The commonly peddled drugs in the city are ganja, brown sugar, cocaine and heroin.
Officials from the department say that the move could curb the problem of nepotism to greater extent.
According to a report, In 2014, the Crime Branch has registered 44 cases under the NDPS Act and have seized many high-end drugs including cocaine in the city. In 2015, 69 cases and in 2016, till August, around 69 cases were registered.
