Distance education for PhD degrees are no more valid
The UGC circular said that only full-time and part time PhD programmes will be treated as degrees.
The University Grants Commission on Tuesday issued a circular stating that the degrees granted through distance education for Doctor of Philosophy programmes will no more be recognised. Further, circular mentions only full-time and part time programs will be considered as the valid degrees for PhD.
On the circular stated by UGC, it had asked as many colleges and universities to upload information on PhDs received by their staff/students, making special mention of the mode in which the degree was pursued. Colleges have been directed to share this information with the UGC at the earliest.
Although most of the universities offer full-time or part time PhD programmes, a few open universities like Indira Gandhi National Open University as well as Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open Universities offer the degree in distance learning mode. The regulations has now put a question mark on the future of nearly 10,000 students pursuing such courses across the country.
