As Bihar bade a tearful farewell to Mujahid Khan who was martyred in an encounter at the CRPF camp in Srinagar, his family refused to accept the cheque of Rs 5 lakh handed out as compensation.

The family members said that it was an insult to a martyred soldier who laid down his life for the country.

After his body was brought down to his village in Piro in Bhojpur district of Bihar, the cheque was handed out to the family members by administrative officials. However the family returned the cheque immediately.

The family members were visibly upset over the absence of political leaders during the last rites.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over Khan's death and had announced that his funeral would be accorded with full police honours.

Khan's father Abdul Khair Khan told media persons that his son wanted to die for the nation and was stalling his marriage saying "it was time to serve the country." His family members and friends have demanded the construction of some memorial for his fond remembrance.

The family members though have turned down the ex-gratia of Rs five lakh announced by the state government saying Khan has not died of liquor consumption but was martyred. "What will we do with the money? He has sacrificed his life for the country," his father said.

The family members were upset that no senior leader, official or minister turned up for the funeral. Even when the body arrived at the Patna airport, only CRPF personnel were present.

The Opposition targeted the government over none of the state or central ministers paying last respect to the martyr saying it was disrespectful to him. The Bhojpur district magistrate and superintendent of police reached to pay their respect to Khan's mortal remains after some local media highlighted their absence.
