Despite bordering Pakistan, Gujarat tops in curbing narcotic menace
New Delhi, June 9: On curbing the drug menace one needs to take a cue from the state of Gujarat. The state which shares a border with Pakistan the main supplier of drugs, just 68 cases have been reported.
For long the Dawood Ibrahim syndicate which is the primary drug supplier to half the world has relied on the Gujarat coast to move his contraband before landing it in Maharashtra.
Several officials part of the Narcotics Control Bureau say that curbing the drug menace in Gujarat is usually difficult as huge consignments are pushed in from Pakistan through this state.
The police and the intelligence have coordinated exceptionally well to ensure that cases of drug abuse or peddling is minimal in the state.
Gujarat
has

show
that
the
Gujarat
records
the
least
cases
at
68.
Jammu
and
Kashmir
another
state
which
shares
a
border
with
Pakistan
is
second
lowest
in
the
list
with
412
cases.
Rajasthan another border state records 1,115 cases while Maharashtra has 1,903. Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have registered, 6,755 and 10,220 cases respectively.
Among the cities to record the lowest number of cases are Vasai VIrar in Maharashtra with 2 cases and Aurangabad in Bihar with 3. Dhanbad in Jharkhand has registered 3 cases while Vododara and Rajkot report 5 cases each.
Mumbai city tops the list with 1,512 cases of drug trafficking while the National Capital recorded 820 cases. Kanpur, Amritsar and Kota have reported, 551,457 and 242 cases respectively.
Curbing drug menace in border state difficult:
The border states are the landing point for narcotics from Pakistan. In this effect both Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir have a good track record in curbing the problem. First and foremost in Gujarat the cases of drug abuse are minimal.
In
Gujarat
there
is
a
proper
mechanism
in
place
to
effectively
curb
the
narcotics
problem.
The
surveillance
and
enforcement
at
import
points
and
land
borders
has
been
effective.
Further
on
this
issue
the
local
police
have
coordinated
well
with
the
drug
law
enforcement
agencies.
In addition this there has been special emphasis on the intelligence apparatus to improve the collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of operational intelligence.
