Deoband will now be called Deovrind
A newly-elected BJP MLA from the area says that the area is known for its historical association with Mahabharata and hence, the name should reflect it too
Deoband in Uttar Pradesh is all set to get a name change. It is likely to be re-named Deovrind. The proposal was made by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Deoband, Brijesh Singh. He feels that the name change is needed since Deoband is associated with the Mahabharata and not the Darul Uloom Deoband.
Several groups have in the past raised this issue. However, this is the first official proposal and it has been made after Singh won the elections from Deoband. He explained to the media that Deoband is sacred for Hindus due to its historical association with the Mahabharata. "The Pandavas had visited this place when they were in exile. This historical importance needs to be highlighted," Singh explained.
He added that several ancient structures were found in the villages here. He said villages such as Rankhandi, Jaruda, Panda and Jakhwala had a close association with the Mahabharata and hence, the name change is necessary.
