New Delhi, Nov 28: The debate over the demonetisation issue largely focus on two issues--impact on Aam Aadmi and impression on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political future.

On November 8, when the Prime Minister himself announced the scrapping of high-value currency notes to wipe out black money from the economy, his supporters hailed the move as a "masterstroke".

However, within days when the public faced immense difficulties in getting hold of cash to conduct their daily lives smoothly, economists and critics slammed Modi government for imposing an "unplanned and hasty" decision on people.

The Prime Minister definitely took a big risk--it is his make or break career move.

Many of his supporters also fear that Modi has committed "political suicide".

Veteran journalist Tavleen Singh, known for her pro-Modi stand, in her latest column-- Fifth Column: Method or madness?--feared that Modi has committed "political suicide" by implementing demonetisation.

"Has Narendra Modi's obsession with 'black money' caused him to commit political suicide? Or is there method in what he has done? These questions have been asked over and over again by political commentators and economists all week," Singh wrote.

"The group I think of as the usual suspects have jubilantly reported that Modi has made the biggest political mistake of his entire career. But they have written Modi's political obituary many times before, including when he was just a chief minister," added Singh.

Before ending her column, Singh advised Modi to initiate other reforms to avoid trouble in the future.

"It really is time for a slew of other reforms, both administrative and economic, and unless the Prime Minister gets on with them with as much speed as he rid us of 86 per cent of our currency, he could find himself in big trouble," Singh added.
