The Delhi High Court has been placed on high alert after a bomb threat was received. A call was made to the police threatening to blow the Delhi High Court up, following which security was stepped up. The same has however been declared a hoax. The call has been traced to a number in Western Uttar Pradesh and the police are currently trying to trace the person.

Security stepped up outside Delhi HC

The police immediately pressed into service, SWAT teams, fire tenders and the bomb squad. Preliminary searches have not revealed anything and the police said that it may have been a hoax call.

The Police Control Room received a call at 10:54 am from north east Delhi saying there would be a blast at the High Court in an hour.

Delhi was on high alert all these day ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. An alert had been issued by the Intelligence Bureau stating that terrorists from Kashmir may try and strike ahead or on Independence Day.

It may be recalled that the Delhi High Court had come under attack in 2011. On September 7 2011, a bombing took place outside Gate number 5 of the Delhi High Court where a brief case bomb was placed. The blast killed 17 persons and injured over 76.

The bombing was claimed by the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. The HuJI in an email had sought the release of Afzal Guru who was hanged after being found guilty in the Parliament attack. The demand was that he not be hanged. A day later another email was sent out, this time in the name of the Indian Mujahideen claiming responsibility for the attack.
