New Delhi, Dec 25: Is Dawood Ibrahim really retiring tomorrow? If that is the case, then who would succeed him? While there is news being made about his so-called retirement, one must bear in mind that his empire was being handled by his close aide, Chhota Shakeel and brother Anees Ibrahim since the past five years.

Official, who have been working on the Dawood files, says that he has not been active since the past five years.

"Do not go by the photographs you see of him as they have been shot over 20 years back," the officer tells OneIndia.

"It is a fact that he needs the support of two persons when he walks and his health has been failing him since the past five to six years," the officer also adds.

Dawood had retired 5 years back:

It was clear that Dawood was no longer in the game when an important drug deal had to be struck three years back with the Boko Haram.

The African connection to the drug business is the most crucial. The entire deal was formulated and negotiated by Dawood's brother Anees Ibrahim.

Three years back, Anees had held a meeting with Boko Haram chief Abu Bakr Shekau in Nigeria. As part of the deal both the Boko Haram and the D Gang would work together and also sell drugs in India.

While this is one aspect, the other is that the Dawood empire when it comes to India and Dubai is being controlled by Chhota Shakeel.

It is he who strikes the real estate deals in Dubai and India. Further when it comes to the extortion racket it is he who oversees the operations.

Even in the recent case where two BJP leaders from Bharuch were murdered, it was Chhota Shakeel who gave the orders.

Why announce retirement:

None of the Indian officials are able to ascertain the claim that Dawood is set to retire tomorrow after his grand birthday bash.

There are also reports that suggest that he will go to Mecca after his retirement. The question is will the man being hunted by multiple countries land up in such a crowded place?

It is very clear that he is attempting to take the heat off him. For India it has become a matter of pride and priority to get Dawood dead or alive. Such leaks claiming retirement does tend to reduce the heat on him.

The news of his retirement has also led to another debate as to who will succeed him? The current position will continue.

It would be Anees running the overall show while Shakeel will control important territory such as India and Dubai.
