CWC issues flood alert for Cauvery basin areas

Bengaluru, Aug 10: Around 80,000 cusecs of water will be discharged from Kabini in Tamil Nadu whereas 42,000 cusecs of water will be released from Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam in Karnataka.

Kapila river in Mysuru is flowing above danger mark due to heavy rains in the catchment area. National Highway connecting Mysuru and Ooty cut off as the road is inundated.

The revival of the southwest monsoon in the upper catchment areas of the Cauvery and the Kabini has augmented the inflow and outflow water.

According to reports, the discharge from the Kabini reservoir in H.D. Kote reached a record rate of 75,000 cusecs on Thursday which is the highest in recent years, while the outflow from the KRS in the adjoining Mandya district was pegged at the rate of 45,000 cusecs.

The Central Water Commission on Thursday issued a flood alert for Cauvery basin areas after Karnataka

"In view of the heavy rain in Karnataka and Kerala, there is a likelihood of heavy release of water from Kabini and KRS reservoirs. The combined discharge of more than one lakh cusecs is expected to reach Mettur dam within two days. Suitable precautionary steps may be taken and downstream areas informed of the release," said an advisory issued by the Commission.
