Curfew extended in Shillong from 4 PM today to 5 AM tomorrow
Curfew has been clamped all over Shillong from 4 PM today to 5 AM tomorrow morning after fresh clashes were reported on Monday. According to reports, police vehicles came under attack.
After three days of unrest, Shillong had a few peaceful hours on Sunday - only to be disturbed by violence that erupted again in defiance of the curfew in the evening. Security forces had to resort to firing teargas shells in violence-hit areas.
Around 400 protesters pelted stones on a CRPF camp near Mowlai bridge in Shillong last night, in wake of curfew imposed following a fight between woman and a bus conductor.
Prakash D, IG CRPF, said, "We request public not to take law in their hand & resolve issue with talks."
The clashes had begun after a bus handyman was beaten up allegedly by a group of residents of Them Metor area on Thursday afternoon. Trouble escalated when rumours spread on social media that the bus handyman had succumbed to injuries, prompting a group of bus drivers to converge at Them Metor. The police had to fire teargas shells to disperse them, officials said.
Meanwhile, tourist taxi and cab driver associations in Guwahati have decided to stage an indefinite strike from Monday demanding protection after at least "four vehicles" were attacked by miscreants in the Mawlai area of Shillong since Friday.
