"Will crackdown on anyone indulging in vandalism in the name of protecting cows. I have the Chief Minister's backing," said newly appointed Uttar Pradesh police chief Sulkhan Singh. His message is loud and clear following incidents of vandalism by self-styled 'gau rakshaks' in the state. Sulkhan Singh who took over as DGP Uttar Pradesh said that he had the full backing of CM Yogi Adityanath to crackdown on anyone who broke the law.

Singh replaced Javeed Ahmed on Saturday as Uttar Pradesh's new police chief. Yogi Adityanath government transferred Ahmed as director-general of the Provincial Armed Constabulary. Singh, a 1980 batch IPS officer is taking over the police force at a time when it is facing massive criticism over mismanagement of anti-Romeo squads and inaction against cow vigilantes.

"Unbiased policing will be ensured. Action will be taken against anyone indulging in vigilantism in the name of gau raksha or anything else, no one has the right to intervene. The police will get a free hand in controlling crime and maintaining law and order with firmness and tact. Those indulging in rowdyism and criminal activities will be dealt without mercy. Even VIPs will not be spared," said Sulkhan Singh as he spoke to reporters after taking charge on Saturday.
