Corruption takes toll on Madhu Koda, former Jharkhand CM loses from Majhganon seat

New Delhi, Dec 23: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda (Jai Bharat Samanta Party) on Tuesday lost from the Majhganon assembly constituency in Jharkhand. He was defeated by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's (JMM) Niral Purty.

Koda has been chargesheeted by the CBI in connection with the coal blocks allocation scam.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren (JMM -Dumka and Barhait seats) and former chief ministers Arjun Munda (BJP-Kharsawan), Madhu Koda (Jai Bharat Samanta Party-Majhgaon) and Babulal Marandi (Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Dhanwar-Giridih) are among the total 1,136 candidates, including 111 women, who contested in the Jharkhand Assembly elections.

As per latest trends, the BJP is all set to form the government in Jharkhand as it is leading in 37 seats followed by the JMM which is ahead in 22 seats.

Anil Murmu (JMM) is leading by over 2000 votes over his nearest BJP rival Simon Marandi from Litipara (ST).

Ranjit Kumar Tiwari (BJP) leading by 2005 votes over his nearest Congress rival and former Assembly speaker Alamgir Alam from Pakur.

Stephen Marandi (JMM) leading by 428 votes over his nearest BJP rival Devidhan Tudu from Maheshpur (ST) seat after the completion of the first round.

Amit Kumar (JMM) leads by over 1000 votes over his nearest Ajsu party candidate Sudesh Kumar Mahto from Silli.

Madhu Koda loses, wife Geeta retains Jagannathpur seat

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda today lost the elections from Majhganon (ST) seat to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha candidate Niral Purty by over 10,000 votes.

His wife and party candidate Geeta Koda, however, retained the Jagannathpur seat, defeating BJP's Mangal Singh Soren by a margin of 24,611 votes. Koda, who had been representing Jagannathpur constituency since 2000, won the assembly seat again in 2005 and went on to be the Chief Minister of the tribal state the next year.

He was pulled down by JMM after being in power for 23 months. He has been chargesheeted by the CBI in coal block allocation scam. He had fought on a BJP ticket in 2000 and in 2005 as Independent from Jagannathpur.

He formed Jai Bharat Samanta Party and nominated his wife Gita from the seat in 2009 as he was an MP then and was battling corruption charges, for which he had been in judicial custody for nearly four years before being released on bail.
