Cong exudes confidence over success of no-confidence motion against Modi govt

Addressing a joint press conference, Congress leaders K C Venugopal and Rajiv Satav said the Narendra Modi government has failed to fulfil various promises it had made to the people of the country before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

On being asked that the Congress and the other opposition parties, moving the no-confidence motion against the government, did not have required the numbers, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament, "Who says we don't have the numbers?"

The Congress has also issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in the Lok Sabha to be present on Friday when the no-confidence motion is taken up in the House.

Venugopal said the prime minister and the BJP had made a host of promises to the people of the country during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and had not fulfilled any of them and dubbed the government as "jumlo ki sarkar". "We are happy that the speaker has decided to take up the 'no-confidence motion' again st the Modi government on Friday. We are very confident that we will be successful in this 'no-confidence motion'," Venugopal told reporters. He said "we want to highlight the anti-people policies and bad governance by these people". "We are confident that we will be successful in the no-confidence motion," Satav said.

Venugopal said the prime minister and the BJP made several promises to the people before assuming power, including providing farmers minimum support price, which was 1.5 times the cost of produce. "They are totally cheating the farmers. There is a hue and cry in the entire country on the issue of farmers, but the Modi government is not doing anything for them," he said, adding that the Congress governments in Punjab and Karnataka have already announced farm loan waivers.

He said the Modi government also promised to bring back black money and claimed that the money of Indians stashed in the Swiss banks has increased by 50 per cent during the year. The Congress leader said that the prime minister had promised to remove corruption and provide 2 crore jobs every year to youth. "But, 50 months after this government came to power none of the promises have been fulfilled," he said, adding that instead of providing over 8 crore jobs, they provided only 12 lakh jobs as per the Labour Bureau data.

Venugopal said that after the note-ban many jobs have been lost due to the distress in business. There is also a total credibility loss in the banking system after the bank scams that have taken place and the credibility of the banking system is falling every day, Venugopal said. "After 4 years the entire country is still waiting for the Rs 15 lakh that the BJP promised to provide in every bank account," he said, claiming that there has been an increase in money in the Swiss banks instead. "This government is 'anti-Dalit' as incidents of atrocities are increasing....Jammu and Kashmir is burning and civilians, soldiers are being killed everyday.

"After former prime minister Manmohan Singh promised to provide special status to Andhra Pradesh on the floor of the House and the BJP leaders also said so, the government has cheated the people of Andhra also," he said.

Satav said in 4 years what the country is seeing is only a 'jumlo ki sarkar' as the ruling dispensation is giving one 'jumla' after the other. "Through this no-confidence motion, we want to tell to the people of the country all these things and highlight the failures of this government," he said.

"The one skill the ruling party has is the skill of bringing in new 'jumlas'," Satav said. The Lok Sabha will on Friday debate and vote on an opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion against the Modi government--the first since the BJP-led NDA combine came to power four years ago--after the speaker today admitted their notices.
