Comprehensive action plan needed for protection of rhinos: Assam CM

Guwahati, Aug 12: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a high level meeting with wildlife experts to discuss the way to protect rhinos in Assam.

The Kaziranga National Park, hit badly due to floods is known as home to famous one-horned rhincoceros, the pride and glory of Assam.

" The government is wholly committed towards protection of the famous one-horned rhincoceros," chief minister was quoted as saying on Thursday.

They discussed the way to save rhinos from poachers.

Sonowal said that a comprehensive action plan has to be evolved for protection of the one-horned rhinos.

"The forest personnel manning the Kaziranga National Park must be equipped with sophisticated arms to stop rhino killings," added Sonowal.

Sonowal also stressed on the need for building a strong intelligence network to track the movements of the poachers and to strengthen the surveillance system.

"Forest department has to work in tandem with the local youth and people in order to enhance involvement of the people on the fringe areas of the park for safeguarding the rhinos.

The forest department has been asked to prepare an action plan immediately. Creation of an intelligence cell with forest and police officers for wildlife crimes with provisions for secret service fund is among other recommendations of wildlife experts to save rhinos.
