'Committed to environment and people,' says Vedanta group Chairman

Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta group condoled the death of protestors in Thoothukudi in a statement issued from London on Friday.

In a video posted on Twitter, Anil Agarwal said, "Sad about what happened in Thoothukudi. The plant is closed because of annual shut down and we are waiting for clearance from the court and the government to restart the plant. We are strictly following the orders of the court and the government."

"We always make sure that community and people of Tuticorin prosper with us. I'm totally committed to people at large and community and with their wish and prosperity, we would like to continue business. I assure you I'm fully committed to environment and people," Agarwal said.

Vedanta is a global, diversified natural resources group of companies in India, Africa, Namibia, Ireland, Australia and Liberia.

Union Mome Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday sought a report from Tamil Nadu government in connection with the violence during Anti-Sterlite protest in Tuticorin which claimed 13 lives.

Tamil Nadu opposition leader MK Stalin has demanded the resignation of the CM and DGP T K Rajendran over the anti-Sterlite violence. He had said Palaniswami and Rajendran should take moral responsibility for the incident and resign.
