The City of Joy is all set to get a slice of Thailand with her first ever floating markets. Aimed at rehabilitating vendors and promoting tourism the floating markets are to come up on the wetlands on the southern fringes of Kolkata.

Many vendors have been displaced owing to the widening of the EM Bypass in Kolkata. "Our main aim is to rehabilitate the businessmen of Baisnabghata-Patuli area owing to the widening. These traders will be rehabilitated at the proposed floating market" stated an official of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA.)

KMDA will be setting up the floating market on a water body near Patuli in the southern part of Kolkata. Pegged at Rs. 9 crores KMDA will be setting up the floating market on a water body near Patuli in the southern part of Kolkata. Over 200 vendors will be rehabilitated in this market.

Pegged at Rs. 9 crores the floating market will have 114 boats. 32 boats have already been acquired by the KMDA. The remaining are expected to arrive by the end of this month.

Measuring 10 feet in length, each boat will have the space of setting up two stalls. The stalls will sell vegetables, fish, fruits, meat, cereals, tea and other edibles.

The banks will have manicured lawns, gardens, food stalls and toilets. A footbridge will connect the EM Bypass with the floating market. The market will be open day and night.

"We hope to draw a large number of tourists to the market. The floating market will be on the lines of Thailand where the floating market is a major tourist attraction" added Firhad Hakim, the Minister in charge of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of West Bengal.

Earlier in March 2015 a there was a proposal of preparing a Detailed Project Report for the floating market by the KMDA and submitting it to the Union Government to be funded by National Livelihood Mission. However, it had failed to see the light of day then.

Pattaya Floating Market in Thailand is the largest floating market in the world. It is a major tourist attraction with cultural shows including Thai classical dance, martial arts demonstrations and portrait painting.

"We will promote it is a major tourist attraction of the State" stated Gautam Deb, Tourism Minister, West Bengal. The city already boasts of a floating hotel on the river Hoogly.
