Centre unveils list of 98 Smart Cities: All you need to know
New Delhi, Aug 27: The Urban Development Ministry announced the names of cities being selected for the NDA government's flagship Smart City project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier launched the criteria and guidelines for 100 Smart Cities to be selected through city challenge competition on June 25.
Here are all the details about the mission and the number of cities included from respective states:

Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar are among the cities who have found place in the coveted Smart Cities project list with Uttar Pradesh bagging maximum 13 nominations.
"13 cities from UP,12 from Tamil Nadu,10 from Maharashtra,7 from MP,3 each from Bihar& Andhra Pradesh have been included in smart cities. 9 capital cities that are not nominated as smart cities include Itanagar, Patna, Shimla, Bengaluru and Kolkata, " said Venkaiah Naidu, while announcing the lsit of Smart cities.
"Smart Cities need Smart People, we need people's co-operation to move forward in our mission," Venkaiah Naidu further said.
Naidu also said that public's participation is needed to fulfill this aim. He also said that prime motive of this is to enhance urban life and this mission is very practical and realistic.
In the first phase, Centre will pick 20 cities and in the next two years 40 cities each will be selected for receiving Central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the next five years. Each smart city would get a Central assistance of Rs 100 crore per year for five years. Around 12 crore residents, which is 35% of urban population, will be benefited under Smart City Mission.
