CEC arrives, holds meet with TN parties
Chennai, Apr 8: Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi arrived here today after visiting Puducherry and held a string of meetings with officials and representatives of political parties over the May 16 Assembly election.
Representatives of various political parties, including AIADMK, DMK, CPI(M), CPI, BJP, and Congress attended the meeting with the CEC for conducting free and fair election and implementation of the model code of conduct.
Meanwhile, the CPI released a copy of its representation to the CEC, giving its suggestions and seeking action.
"The commission may simplify the norms so that the merchants and public who carry money exceeding Rs 50,000 can get the money (back) within hours (from poll authorities in case of seizure) if found genuine," CPI said.
The request comes against the background of continuing seizure of cash and merchandise without proper supporting documents. It also wanted the authorities to ensure private firms and establishments give paid holidays to workers to enable them to vote.
"Insisting on removing flags and boards from our own building is not fair and the officials may be advised not to harass the parties," CPI said.
