The special CBI court cited lack of evidence against the police officers before discharging them. IPS officer (retd) D G Vanzara was the chief of Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad while Dinesh was an IPS officer with the Rajasthan police at the time of the encounter. 15 accused, including police officers, have been discharged in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case so far.

The former IPS officer returned to Gandhinagar after amendments were made to his bail excusing him from signing the CBI registry every day. D G Vanzara had announced that he would contest the election in Gujarat but refused to state if he would fight from a party or independently.

D G Vanzara was accused of extra judicial killing of Sohrabuddin in 2005 by the CBI. He was arrested in 2007 and remained in judicial custody till 2015. As of September 2013, 32 police officers, including six IPS officers were arrested for a series of encounters that took place under Vanzara's watch.
