Cauvery waters verdict: The four possible judgments

It is just a matter of time before the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict in the Cauvery waters case. The arguments were marathon in nature and the issue is an important one.

One could expect a lengthy order from the Supreme Court. Many would hope that the verdict puts to rest this 100 plus year issue once and for all.

What could the verdict be? The three judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra would have four options. Let us see what they are:

• If the order of the Cauvery Waters Tribunal is upheld then the schedule delivery of 192 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu will have to be supplied.
• The order of the tribunal could be modified and the delivery of water be reduced.
• The green signal to the Mekedatu dam could be given. This was proposed by Karnataka and opposed by Tamil Nadu.
• The constitution of the Cauvery Management Board could be ordered. The water sharing in future would fall under the jurisdiction of this board.
