Cauvery water dispute: Bengaluru to get additional 4.2 tmc ft water
IT city Bengaluru to get 4.2 tmc ft Cauvery water, said Supreme Court while delivering a much-awaited verdict in Cauvery river dispute between Karnataka and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The apex court made it clear that increase in the share of Cauvery water for Karnataka by 14.75 tmc ft has been done keeping in view the fact that there is an increased demand of drinking water by Bengaluru and also for many industrial activities.
"The pre-independence agreement is valid. Karnataka gets additional water keeping in mind the water shortage that Bengaluru is facing. A Cauvery Water Management board will be set up and they will have control over water allocation, and not the states," said Supreme Court.
As per SC order, Karnataka will provide 177.2 tmc ft water to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka will get additional 14.75 tmc ft as compared to the tribunal's order which had ordered for the release of 192 tmc ft.
