Residents in Bengaluru planning to buy a new car will have to show proof that they have adequate parking space for it, if a new proposal from Karnataka government is accepted.

The Karnataka government has sent a proposal to Parliament to include this rider in the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, which is pending before a committee of the Rajya Sabha.

According to the proposal, no vehicle should be registered without a certificate regarding availability of adequate parking space.

The registration is done by the state transport department as parking-related issues fall under the purview of the muncipal corporations.

The city with the highest per capita vehicles has posed a major challenge to the Administration and the civic body to tackle the parking chaos. The parking situation in some areas has reached alarming proportions where chaos outside residential areas is the order of the day. Illegal and on-road parking have also been one of the major reasons of choking roads in the city.

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August. The amendments are yet to be passed by Parliament. It aims to address the issue of road safety and improve the processes for citizens while dealing with transport departments.

In december last year, then Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu had said that "No car or vehicle should be registered without adequate parking space availability certificate."

Underlining he was "very keen" to put in place such riders for vehicles' registration, Naidu said that his ministry was in discussions with Surface Transport Ministry in this regard.
