Brain-dead student donates organs to 8 people

Coimbatore, Feb 25: Ramesh, a first year engineering student met with a fatal accident while riding back home from college. He collided headon with another two wheeler and got seriously injured. Passerbys took him to the Dharapuram Government Hospital, from where he was transferred to the KMCH hospital for further treatment.

Belonging to the Kilangundal village near Mulanur in Dharapuram Taluk, Ramesh was later declared brain dead. His father Ramalingam, who had learnt about organ donations, agreed to do the same with his son.

So, the kidneys, cornea, liver, heart and pancreas were harvested. The liver and kidney were transplanted to patients registered in KMCH, the heart was then sent to Fortis Malar and the pancreas to Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

Two green corridors were created to enable Fortis Malar and Apollo Hospital to receive the organs. K.G Suresh Rao, head of Cardiac Anaesthesia at Fortis Malar Hospital, said,"We received a call on Tuesday night and reached Coimbatore around 8.40 p.m. We wanted both the heart and the lungs but unfortunately the lungs were not in good condition. The heart was harvested this morning and it reached the hospital around 10.30 a.m."

The heart was transplanted to a Russian boy who survived a heart attack. His heart was weak and blood clots had travelled to his brain. The second green corridor was created to transport the pancreas for a 33-year old Type-1 diabetic patient at Apollo.
