Brahmaputra's level may rise: China warns India as it may release excess water

New Delhi, Aug 30: China has reportedly warned India that the water level in Brahmaputra river is likely to rise as it may release excess water into the river due to heavy rainfall.

China's letter states that it will soon be releasing excess water as it has been raining heavily in the region.

The advisory issued earlier by the East Siang District Administration, China, on Aug 20 cautioned the General Public, to refrain from venturing into Siang River (a tributary of Brahmaputra) for Fishing, swimming and other activities to avoid any eventualities.

Authorities have alerted people in Jarku, Paglek, Jarkong, Banskota, Berung and Namsing areas that are located adjacent to Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh. The Brahmaputra river is prone to catastrophic flooding.

The Brahmaputra River, also called Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan language, originates on the Angsi Glacier located on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang of Tibet. The Brahmaputra enters India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, where it is called Siang. It makes a very rapid descent from its original height in Tibet, and finally appears in the plains, where it is called Dihang.
