The blast at Bodhgaya in Bihar and the subsequent recovery of two crude bombs is now being probed by a team of the National Investigation Agency. While the forensic report would analyse the nature of the bomb, security officials say that this could well be an act of terror.

Bodhgaya blast: An attempt to avenge atrocities against Rohingyas?

There has been intelligence suggesting that some terror groups would look to target Bodhgaya again in a bid to avenge the alleged atrocities being meted out on the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

While the intelligence was not specific to Bodhgaya, it was stated that terror groups such as the Students Islamic Movement of India, Lashkar-e-Tayiba, al-Qaeda and Islamic State may look to target Buddhist sites in India.

However the initial probe into the Bodhgaya incident suggests that this was an attempt to create panic and also send out a warning. The initial report shows that the bombs were low intensity in nature.

NIA officials believe the low-intensity explosion must have taken place near a generator outside Kalchakra ground from where a burst thermos flask was found on Friday evening. The local police's search operation led to the recovery of two cane bombs, one near Gate Number 4 of the Mahabodhi temple and another near the Sri Lankan monastery.

It may be recalled that in 2013, Bodhgaya had been rocked by a series of explosions in which five persons were injured. It was found later that the explosions were triggered off by members of the Students Islamic Movement of India in retaliation to the Rohingya crisis.
