'Blue whale' can't be downloaded says TN police, Madras HC seeks IIT's help
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has sought IIT Madras' help in stopping people from accessing the Blue Whale Challenge. The court has issued notices to state and central government to suggest ways to block the game on social networking sites.
The Tamil Nadu CB-CID told the court that the game, Blue Whale, cannot be downloaded since it was neither on a gaming platform nor on social media. The Union government in a letter dated August 11, 2017, had directed internet majors to immediately remove the links of the dangerous online game. Tamil Nadi police produced the same and told the court that the game could not be downloaded in the state as well. It is not in the form of an app.
The Madras High court has sought stringent action against those sharing links of the Blue Whale game on platforms like Facebook, Share It, Whats App. The center and the state governments have been given till September 8 to respond to its notice and come up with ways of blocking the game.
The Bench has also pushed for adequate information and appropriate counseling against the Blue Whale game. The Court took Suo Moto cognizance of the game after reports of suicide linked to the game merged from Tamil Nadu. The court has sought IIT Madras' help in identifying ways to block the game from the internet.
Cyber experts, on the other hand, belive that blocking links to a game, including Blue Whale is practically impossible. Udbhav Tiwari, a cyber expert, and researcher said that the game did not require a link. "You don't need a link to start playing the Blue Whale game because it can be played on any communication medium including Whats App, e-mail, skype, facebook messenger etc. All you need is a word of mouth," he said.
