Sources said that If the BJP has to improve its tally, it will definitely go for an alliance in the state. The BJP had won maximum six Lok Sabha seats in alliance with AIADMK in 2004 Lok Sabha elections. It fielded nine candidates in 2014 when it contested elections in alliance with the six smaller parties of the state and won just one seat. The state might go into a multi-cornered contest with two main rivals - AIADMK and the DMK - and over half a dozen other smaller regional political parties vying for the total 39 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Both the important political parties -- the AIADMK and the DMK --are struggling with the leadership tussle. The tussle between TTV Dhinakaran and chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in AIADMK is the moment to watch for. Dhinakaran is the nephew of VK Sasikala who was the loyalist of late chief minister J Jyalalithaa.
