BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj calls dera chief ‘noble soul’, questions court’s verdict
In a bizarre statement, Bhartiya Janata Party MP Sakshi Maharaj on Friday defended Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, calling him a "noble soul".
"One person alleging sexual exploitation but crores stand with him today. "Who is correct? 1 crore people who are supporting Baba or that girl who was raped?" he questioned.
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was found guilty of raping two 'sadhvis' (female followers) by the CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana. The CBI had filed an FIR against Ram Rahim in 2002 and the case came to trial in 2008. However, the quantum of sentence will be announced on August 28.
Violence has broken out in Panchkula and nearby areas as supporters of Ram Rahim Singh went on a rampage setting government buildings and media OB vans on fire. Government offices have also been vandalised.
Referring to the violence that has taken place, "If even bigger incidents take place, court will also be responsible not just Dera people, he said.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condemned the violence unleashed by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's followers after their 'godman' was convicted in rape case.
