The Karnataka assembly on Monday passed a bill legalising the conduct of Kambala. The Karnataka High court in 2016 had stayed the buffalo racing sport after PETA in a petition claimed that conducting Kambala was in violation of a 2014 Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had been vocal about passing a legislation legalising Kambala on the lines of Tamil Nadu assembly passing a bill legalising Jallikattu despite a Supreme Court order banning it.

The demand to legalise Kambala, a traditional coastal Karnataka sport grew after Jallikattu legislation by the Tamil Nadu government owing to protests. The Karnataka government also chose to amend the Central governments' act to legalise the sport. The legislation comes in the backdrop of Kambala committees and various organisations staging protests demanding legalisation of the sport.

The Karnataka high court has refused to pass an order on Kambala before the Supreme Court's verdict on Jallikattu. Despite a pending petition, the Karnataka assembly passed a bill legalising Kambala.
