Bilaspur rerun: 16 lose vision after botched-up eye surgery
Gurdaspur, Dec 5: Just days after a botched up sterilisation camp that claimed the lives of 14 women in Bilaspur, 16 people lost their eye sight after undergoing a surgery in an eye camp in Gurdaspur.
The patients are said to be from Amritsar who underwent a cataract eye surgery in an eye camp organised by an NGO. However the operations were unsuccessful and the patients had to be admitted in an ENT hospital.
The surgeries took place ten days ago. However the incident came to light after 16 patients approached the the Deputy Commissioner Bhagat to lodge a complaint against the NGO and doctors concerned.
Officials say that the NGO did not approach the district administration for the necessary permission. Officials also say that the patients, who are above 60 years, have lost their vision completely and there are no or very little chances of reversing the effects of the surgery.
An inquiry is currently underway.
