Bihar goes dry: Desperate alcoholics consume anything to get high!

Patna, April 7: As Bihar government has officially banned the consumption of liquor, some desperate alcoholics have found bizarre ways to get high!

As per a report published in TOI, a man in Bettiah district ate soap bars in an attempt to consume anything like liquor.

According to doctors, a 30-year-old man even failed to recognise his family members, without getting a dose of booze. He used to drink at-least 600-1200 ml of country liquor daily.

Dr RK Singh who is treating him told the leading daily that the "man could not stand properly when he was brought. He is experiencing tremors on and off."

Some other alcohol addicts were even reported to have consumed large amount of paper and painkillers to get high. [Bihar liquor ban: Here is what Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor said to CM Nitish Kumar]

A teenage alcohol addict even turned violent at Nalanda Medical College Hospital in Patna. His parents said that the boy, who was a heavy drinker, even consumed chillies.

On Wednesday, April 6, the State Health Society of Bihar (SHSB) claimed to receive at least 749 cases at 38 de-addiction centres.

Desperate liquor addicts are being administered injectable drugs, an official at SHSB said.

Meanwhile, huge quantity of liquor, country made as well Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), was seized during stepped up raids across Bihar on Wednesday, hours after total ban on alochol was clamped.

BJP also questioned the Nitish Kumar government's decision allowing sale of liquor in army canteens in Bihar, saying it would make difficult for the government to enforce complete prohibition.

"If complete prohibition has been enforced in the people's interest in the state, what is the basis of allowing sale of liquor in army canteens," senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said.
