New Delhi, Sept 1: Indian Radiology and Imaging Association (IRIA) which has more than 20,000 radiologists has given a call for a nationwide indefinite strike starting from September 1.

Scores of radiologists will hold a protest at the Jantar Mantar on Thursday to press for their demand to amend a legislation that "equates" even minor clerical mistakes committed during their jobs to sex determination.

Radiologists go on nationwide strike

What are their demands?

  • The radiologists are angry with the rather "unreasonable" provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) under which for minor lapses centres can be sealed, and doctors can be booked or their practising licences can be suspended.
  • The apex body of radiologists IRIA has alleged that certain provisions of PCPNDT Act are "draconian" and they need to be amended.

IRIA's reaction

  • IRIA on Wednesday, August 31 held a meeting with the government officials. Reportedly, they were assured that government will look into their demand.
  • "The government has assured us, but they will tell us by Thursday only as to what exactly it entails. Meanwhile, we will hold a demonstration at Jantar Mantar tomorrow, and take further decision on whether to continue the strike or call it off," IRIA President O P Bansal said.
  • "Even minor clerical mistakes committed during our job, they are equated to sex-determination. And, several radiologists have faced harassment and been victimised," he claimed.

Which organisations have supported the strike?

  • Many medical organisations including FOGSI, AOGS and IMA have also supported the strike.
  • The Indian Federation of Ultrasound is also supporting the cause.

Impact of the strike

  • From September 1, all ultrasound, CT-Scan and MRI centres across India will be closed.
  • The strike can seriously affect the health sector, as ultrasound tests as diagnostic tools have become an integral part of today's health programmes.

IRIA

  • Set up in 1930s, as Indian Radiological Association, the IRIA has currently about 14,000 members and 27 chapters across the country.
