Yamuna-A threat to Delhi, NCR people

This startling facts have been revealed in a report by the Energy and Resources Institute.

The poisonous river water is not only affecting Delhi people, but it is also becoming a huge risk to people from Agra and even Mathura. Report also highlighted the most unbelievable fact that using Yamuna water may make people, residing in these areas impotent.

Even National Green Tribunal acknowledged this shocking fact. Recently, the National Green Tribunal had prohibited cultivation of edible crop on the floodplains of Yamuna, saying the vegetables grown there were "highly contaminated" and their consumption could lead to cancer.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, in a recent judgement, said the vegetables and crops grown on the floodplains were highly contaminated and their consumption may lead to serious ailments like cancer.

"It is an established fact that presently, vegetables, fodder grown and allied projects at the flood plain of River Yamuna are highly contaminated. Besides containing ingredients of high pollutants, such produce is even found to contain metallic pollutants...

"Therefore, we direct that no authority shall permit and no person shall carryout, any edible crops /fodder cultivation on the Flood Plain. This direction shall strictly be adhered to till Yamuna is made pollution free and is restored to its natural wholesomeness," the bench had said.

Various studies have confirmed the presence of heavy metals in vegetables that were grown with water from the Yamuna. Experts say that as the water contains heavy dose of the metals like Nickel, lead, manganese, chromium, mercury and zinc it affects human life the most. The high amounts of these metallic pollutants can cause serious health hazards like cancers.

On asking about how these water produce(vegetables, crops) affect human life, Dr Anoop Misra, a doctor in Fortis Hospital said, "Ingestion of such contaminated food can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, blood infection, dehydration, urinary infection and kidney dysfunction. We have indeed seen increasing number of such cases recently".
