Bengaluru, Aug 31: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped in her paying guest (PG) room by a knife-wielding intruder in the wee hours of August 26. Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case and are investigating.

The woman, an IT company employee hailing from Tamil Nadu, was alone in her shared PG room when the assault occurred.

"The woman was alone in her room when the accused barged in at around 2.30 am on August 26. Her roommate was on night shift. She had not locked the door before going to sleep, which made the entry easy for the rapist," DCP South-East Boralingaiah told OneIndia.

The intruder initially demanded gold and money, but realising that she had nothing to part with, he began to assault her sexually, Boralingaiah said, adding that police had formed several teams to track down the rapist.

V.S. Ugrappa, chairman of the Expert Committee on Prevention of Sexual Violence against Women and Children, visited the victim and suggested to the police that complaints be filed against the PG accommodation owner and builder on charges of abetting the crime.

Ugrappa has also written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asking him to set up a regulatory body for paying guest accommodations. Some 6,000 to 8,000 such PG facilities are clustered in the Parapanna Agrahara police station limits close to the city's IT hubs.
