New Delhi, Jna 9: The arrest of a cleric from Bengaluru by the Delhi police has led them to several details which suggest that he had allegedly been recruiting youths to join terror groups.

An officer with the Special Cell of the Delhi police said that he had been delivering hate speeches urging youth to join terror groups apart from running a website called ittagullah.com aimed at recruitments.

The 51 year old cleric Maulana Syed Anzar was suspected to also be plotting assassinations of BJP leaders and have even visited various states such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

When the Delhi police picked him up, they said that he was recruiting on behalf of the al-Qaeda in the Sub-Continent or the AQIS.

The Delhi police say that his primary role was to motivate the youth. Two passports seized from him are being verified.

The police suspect that he may have visited Pakistan too. In the recent past the Delhi police have carried out various arrests claiming that they had busted a module of the AQIS in India. While two arrests were carried out in Uttar Pradesh the other was in Odisha.

The police believe that the Bengaluru based cleric was in touch with these persons and could have been part of a wider network of the AQIS in India.

Maulana Anzar was a controversial figure and had been shunned by many in the Muslim community for provoking the youth. Many who knew him said that they suspect if he was part of any terror network, but admit that his speeches were extremely controversial.

He would publicly call for the implementation of the harsh Sharia law and even urge youth to beat up women who didn't wear the burqa.

The Delhi police who have his custody till January 20th say that his questioning is expected to spill the beans on the network run by him. They suspect that he had strong contacts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and there are indications that he had radicalized some youth and even helped them join the AQIS.
