Bengaluru Horror: 588 cases of child labour and 33 cases of child sexual abuse reported in a year

Bengaluru, Nov 15: Children's Day celebrations are over.

Now, let's talk about some unpalatable topics like child sexual abuse, child labour and child marriage, to name a few.

On Children's Day, celebrated across the country in a massive way on Monday, Childline Bengaluru Chapter released the number of child-related cases received by the NGO from September 2015 to August 2016.

According to the statistics provided by Childline to OneIndia, the NGO registered 588 cases of child labour and 33 cases of child sexual abuse in 12 months.

Childline is a country-wide NGO which helps children in times of emergency, through its toll free number 1098.

The miseries of children in the city don't end here.

The city reported 37 cases of child marriage, 146 cases of child-related physical abuse, 63 cases of corporal punishment, 11 cases of abandoned children, one case of child trafficking, nine cases of substance abuse among minors, 105 cases of school drop-out children, 15 cases of missing children and 88 cases of parents seeking help for their children in various matters, stated the annual report of Childline.

"Here we are talking about the cases received by us on our toll free number. Actual figures could be much more," said Nagasimha G Rao, nodal coordinator of Childline, Bengaluru.

Rao added, "Whenever we receive calls, we connect the aggrieved party with various departments like women and child development and police to help solve their problems. We also provide counselling to parents and children depending on the nature of the cases."
