Bengaluru: 40-year-old zoo gatekeeper mauled to death by two white tigers

A 40-year-old care taker was mauled to death by two white tigers at Bannerghatta National Park near Bengaluru on Sunday. The victim Anjaneya alias Anjini lived in the nearby Hakki Pikki Colony, and had taken up the post of caretaker on temporary basis only a week ago.

The enclosure that is home to three tigers has three gates, one of which opens into the safari area. Every morning, this gate is opened for animals to leave the enclosure and closed once they return in the evening.

The incident happened on Saturday at around 7 pm when Anjini went into the enclosure to feed the tigers and check if they had returned from the safari area. However, he delayed closing the gate. That was when one of tigers attacked him, and dragged him out into the safari area.

The forest staff in the vicinity heard his cries for help but when they realise it was too late. He died on the spot.

Meanwhile, a case has registered by the police. The incident comes close on the heels of another case of negligence reported in the safari area last month.
