Bengaluru 2nd city most likely to run out of water: Report

A report by BBC based UN-endorsed projections listed 11 countries across the globe likely to run out of drinking water.

Owing to a combination of climate change, human action, and population growth global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40 per cent in 2030, according to reports. The reported cited the growth of real estate developments following the rise of the city as a technological hub. And the local officials are struggling to manage the city's water and sewage systems. Also, loss of over half of its drinking water due to antiquated plumbing is one of the reasons for the crisis.

The report also notes that not a single lake in the city is suitable for drinking or bathing purposes.

The scarcity of water in Bangalore or in India is not a revelation though, according to a report in The Guardian, Bangalore had 285 lakes in the 1970s, the number of which reduced to 194 lakes in 2017.

Bangalore is the third largest city and the fifth largest metropolitan area in India and is one of the fastest growing metropolitan cities. As per Census 2011, the population of Bangalore city was about 8.5 million. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is responsible for providing water supply to BBMP area of 800 sq. km.
