Bengalurian takes over as Commanding Officer of INS Vikramaditya

Bengaluru, Nov 2: The largest warship of Indian Navy INS Vikramaditya will be now commanded by Bengalurian Captain Krishna Swaminathan.

Indian Navy said that Captain Krishna Swaminathan assumed charge as the second Commanding Officer (CO) of INS Vikramaditya at Karwar base on Monday.

He was the Naval Assistant to the Chief of the Naval Staff (NA to CNS), a crucial appointment, till recently.

The taking over event was held at the Karwar base today.

INS Vikramaditya has been so far commanded by Captain Suraj Berry ever since it was commissioned at Severodvinsk in Russia on November 26, 2013.

During an interaction with OneIndia, at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala last year, Capt Swaminathan had complemented the photo of a special child saluting a naval policeman carried in the news portal.

The photo had gone viral last year and it has been shared by millions so far.

Captain Krishna Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja, and the United States Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

  • Capt Swaminathan did his schooling from Bishop Cottons Boy's School, Bengaluru and Sainik School, Bijapur.
  • Previously commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish and guided missile destroyer INS Mysore.
  • Holds B.Sc. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management from the Xavier Institute of Management, Mumbai, MA (Defence Studies) from King's College, London, M.Phil (Defence and Strategic Studies) from Mumbai University.
  • Awaiting his PhD for his thesis on international relations submitted to the Mumbai University.
  • Was an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
  • Was Director and Principal Director Naval Signals at Naval Headquarters.
