Mumbai, Dec 20: In an exemplary act of honesty, a farmer from Beed district in the drought-hit Marathwada region returned excess gold, worth a few lakh rupees, to the bank which gave it to him after he repaid loan.

Ramprasad Mane had taken a loan of Rs 18,000 from Majalgaon branch of the Vaidyanath Bank. He kept gold with the bank as collateral, an official said.

After he repaid the loan, the bank returned the gold. However, when he noticed that the gold he got back was much more than he had kept as collateral, Mane brought it to the bank's notice, the official said.

The bank had returned the gold deposited by one Rambhau Mane in the same branch and mistook Ramprasad Mane for him, he said. The gold the farmer had got after repaying the loan was worth around Rs three lakh, he added.
