Bengaluru, April 14: The BJP, continuing with its victory streak, on Thursday won five out of 10 assembly by-elections across eight states, including Delhi, with the Congress getting solace from Karnataka where it retained two seats and held on to another in Madhya Pradesh.

The Trinamool Congress won in West Bengal and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerged victorious in Jharkhand.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a victory tweet, said: "I thank the people for the constant support, blessings and unwavering faith in politics of development and good governance" agenda of the BJP.

BJP President Amit Shah greets BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal joint candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa for his victory in the Rajouri Garden bypoll, at his residence in New Delhi.

Sirsa defeated Meenakshi Chandela of the Congress by a margin of nearly 14,000 votes. Sirsa garnered 40,602 votes, Chandela 25,950 and the AAP's Harjeet Singh 10,243 out of a total 78,091 votes polled.[Pic credit: PTI]

Pegu defeated Babul Sonowal of the Congress by a margin of over 9,000 votes. Pegu polled 75,217 votes, Sonowal 65,932 votes and Jadu Hazarika of the CPI-M 4,944 votes out of the total 148,658 polled.[Pic credit: PTI]

In the Gundlupet constituency, Mohan Kumari Uruf alias Geetha of the Congress defeated BJP's C S Niranjankumar by 10,877 votes.

Of the 1,74,955 votes polled in Gundlupet, Geetha bagged 90,260 votes (51.6 per cent) and Niranjankumar 79,383 votes (45.4 per cent). The total electorate is 2,00,892.

The by-election for Gundlupet was caused due to the death of Congress lawmaker and Cooperation Minister Mahadeva Prasad in early January. Geetha is his widow.

Nanjangud (SC), Karnataka: Kalale Keshavmurthy, Congress

In the prestigious Nanjangud constituency, ruling party's candidate Kalale Keshavamurthy defeated BJP nominee Srinivasa Prasad by 21,334 votes.

Of the 1,56,315 votes polled in Nanjangud, Keshavamurthy secured 86,212 (55%) and Prasad 64,878 (41.5%).

The total electorate in the reserved seat is 2,01,823.

The by-election was necessitated due to the former lawmaker (Prasad) resigning from the reserved constituency in October after he was dropped from the Cabinet as Revenue Minister in June. He joined the BJP in early January.

Shobha Rani Kushwah defeating her nearest rival of Congress Banwari Lal Sharma with a record margin of 38,678 votes.

Shobha Rani got 91,548 votes against Congress candidate Sharma's 52,875 votes, scoring a vote percentage of 62.15.

In Himachal Pradesh, the opposition BJP retained its stronghold Bhoranj assembly seat for the seventh consecutive term. Anil Dhiman defeated Promila Devi of the Congress by a margin of 8,290 votes.

Dhiman polled 24,453 votes against 16,144 votes polled by Devi while Pawan Chandel, a BJP rebel who contested as an Independent, polled 4,630 votes. 263 voters opted for NOTA. Photo credit: Twitter

Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh: Shivnarayan Singh, BJP

BJP's Shivnarayan Singh defeated Savitri Singh of the Congress by 25,476 votes in Bandhavgarh.

Of the 135,304 votes polled, the BJP candidate garnered 54.95 per cent (74,356) while Savitri Singh polled 36.13 per cent (48,880 votes).

In Bhind district's Ater, the Congress' Hemant Katare defeated BJP's Arvind Singh Bhadoria by a close margin of 867 votes to retain the seat.

Of the 123,368 votes polled, Bhadoria got 48.01% (59,228) while Katare got 47.31% (58,371).

The Ater seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Satyadev Katare of the Congress.

Kanthi Dakshin, West Bengal: Chandrima Bhattacharya (Trinamool Congress)

In Kanthi Dakshin constituency of East Midnapore district of West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress candidate and former health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya defeated Sourindra Mohan Jana of the BJP by a margin of 42,526 votes.

Bhattacharya got 95,369 votes and Jana 52,843. Communist Party of India candidate Uttam Pradhan, who had finished second in 2016, lost his security deposit this time.

The Congress also put up a poor show, with its nominee Nabakumar Chanda getting only around 1.3 per cent of the votes.

The seat fell vacant after Trinamool legislator Dibyendu Adhikari was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tamluk in 2016.

In Jharkhand's Littipara, Simon Marandi of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha defeated Hemlal Murmu of the BJP by 12,900 votes.

Marandi, polled 65,551 votes against 52,551 votes polled by Murmu. Kistu Soren of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) secured the third position.

Ten candidates had contested the by-poll from the seat, which fell vacant following the death of JMM MLA Anil Murmu early this year.
